The world's oldest living city, Varanasi – also known as Kashi (city of life) and Banaras, is the spiritual capital of India. It is one of the seven holy cities of Hinduism. The old city of Varanasi is located on the western bank of the Ganges, spread out in a maze of narrow streets. Be prepared to walk and encounter some sacred cows! There are temples at almost every turn in Varanasi, but Kashi Vishwanath Temple is the most visited and the oldest temple. Banaras is known as the city of Lord Shiva for a reason, and rightly so. Varanasi is considered an auspicious place to die, as it is believed to provide moksha or liberation from the cycle of life and death. Spiritually enlightening, the heart of the city pulsates around the ghats, about 80 of which border the Ganga. Be prepared for the sights, sounds and smells! Don't forget to enjoy hot chaat and cold lassi. However, all the chaos and noise on the ghats comes to a halt before evening falls, when the Ganga Aarti begins, a ceremony of immense grandeur.
